Brexit: Entry and immigration to the UK
30/01/2020 12:00

What will change for EU citizens who want to travel or immigrate to the UK?

For tourists, business travelers or immigrants, nothing will change for the time being. During the transition period, until the end of 2020, EU citizens can continue to immigrate and take up employment. It is recommended to enter the country with a passport. The more than 3 million EU citizens in the UK, including around 300,000 Germans, will retain all previous rights. The UK will then end free movement for workers. It is not yet clear exactly how immigration will be controlled and managed in the future.

Tourists and business travelers who want to stay for up to 90 days will not need a visa. EU workers will have to apply for visas and work permits. EU citizens already living in the UK have until mid-2021 to apply for a permanent residence permit. To obtain settled status, they must provide evidence of five years' residence on the island without major interruptions. Those who have not lived in Britain for this long can obtain „Pre-Settled Status“, which grants a temporary right of residence and work and can then be extended once five years have passed. Anyone who misses the deadline for applying for settled status by June 30, 2021 will not be automatically deported, the government recently clarified.
