The Indian consulate informs

Travelers with a currently valid visa must submit the passport with the currently valid visa when applying for a new visa. The currently valid visa will be declared invalid and canceled upon reapplication.

If the traveler no longer has the passport with the currently valid visa, an official declaration of loss from the authorities is required.

As of September 30, 16, citizens with German nationality require an ETA for entry and transit. You need a confirmed ETA before boarding the flight to Canada. The ETA is valid for 5 years.
