USA: Update - Entry into the USA from Nov. 8, 2021
19/10/2021 09:00

The Biden administration announced last Friday (15. October) announced that fully vaccinated travelers will be allowed to enter the US starting Monday, November 8, 2021. This means that the entry ban for travelers from the Schengen area that has been in place since March 2020 will be lifted and replaced by a new system that requires proof of vaccination. Business travelers should no longer have to apply for a National Interest Exception (NIE) to enter the USA.
At this point in time, it can be assumed that the Biden administration will not grant the CDC guidelines will follow who is considered vaccinated. The CDC provides that those who are fully vaccinated with an FDA-approved vaccine (Moderna, Pfizer/Biontech and Johnson & Johnson) and a WHO-approved vaccine (Astrazeneca, Sinopharm and Sinovac) will be allowed to enter the United States. In addition, the CDC stipulates that persons who have been vaccinated with cross-vaccines are also eligible for entry.
There is still no written guidance on how the Biden administration will implement this new directive. There are still unanswered questions, particularly about who is eligible for an exception. In addition, there may be delays in implementation. We therefore recommend that business travelers continue to apply for an NIE waiver until the new system is in place. In addition, travelers from Europe to the U.S. using an NIE waiver who are not vaccinated should note that they will not be allowed to enter the U.S. once the travel ban is lifted if they are not fully vaccinated.

The White House informs:

The USA will allow travelers vaccinated against the coronavirus back into the country from 8 November. „The new U.S. travel policy, which requires foreign travelers to be vaccinated, will begin on November 8,“ a White House spokesperson said on Twitter on Friday. In addition to a vaccination before departure, travelers will also have to present a negative corona test in the future.

The current regulations prohibit entry for those who have been in the Schengen area, Ireland or the UK in the previous 14 days. Entry bans also apply to China, India, Brazil, South Africa and Iran. US citizens, people with a permanent residence permit - a so-called green card - and holders of certain visas with an exemption are not affected.
