The U.S. Customs and Border Protection take import regulations very seriously. An official became aware of an apple in an American woman's handbag when she entered the country. As the lady had not declared the apple, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection official imposed a fine of 500 US dollars. The American woman was lucky in this case, as a fine can amount to up to 10,000 US dollars.
Please note the US import regulations. In addition to fruit, foods such as meat and vegetables must be declared on import. This also applies to fruit that is served on board the aircraft.
